Chinese Chippendale faux-bamboo armchair with lattice-carved pagoda-shaped back and griffin head arms. Designed in the Chinese manner expounded by Sir William Chambers in his highly influential “Designs for Chinese Building, Furniture, Dresses, Machines and Utensils,” of 1757, this exotic “pagoda chair” is derived from chair leg patterns published by Thomas Chippendale in “The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker’s Director,” 3rd edition, London, 1762, pl XXVII where nine such designs were published. The original is in the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Getty, San Francisco.
